Hau Giang

Geographic location: The province is bounded by Tiền Giang to the north, Trà Vinh to the south, Vĩnh Long to the west, South China Sea to the east

Area: 1,601 km2

Topographic features: Hậu Giang has topographic features of Mekong delta. The terrain slightly slopes from the north to the south, the east to the west
Administrative units: Include two towns of Vị Thanh and Ngã Bảy, five districts of Châu Thành, Châu Thành A, Long Mỹ, Phụng Hiệp and Vị Thuỷ

Population: 798,800 people (Statistics yearbook 2007)

Natural resources: Hậu Giang does not have natural resource advantages like other Mekong delta provinces. The major resources are water and forest. Hậu Giang has many rivers and channels with a total of 2,300 km long. Besides, Hậu Giang has 3,604.62 ha cajuput forest with over 71 species of terrestrial animals and 135 bird races. There is a various wet land flora. Paddy and fruit trees are major agriculture crops.

- Tourism resources: Hậu Giang has several interesting tourist points such as provincial party’s committee base (during the war), Phụng Hiệp floating market, Uncle Hồ temple in Lương Tâm - Long Mỹ , Victory monument of Tầm Vu in Châu Thành A etc.

- Human resources: In 2006, Hậu Giang population was 772,239 with 470,130 labourers but only 382,035 of them having stable jobs.

- Industrial zones: Hậu Giang has one industrial – handicraft center and two industrial clusters Phụng Hiệp industrial – handicraft center (24,7 ha); Sông Hậu industrial cluster (578 ha) in Đông Phú and Phú Hữu A commune, Châu Thành district; Tân Phú Thành industrial cluster (220 ha) in  Tân Phú Thạnh, Châu Thành A district.

Transportation system: The province’s major means of transportation are roadway and waterway. Roadway: The province has 80 km of 2 national highways No. 1A and No.61. These two highways are being upgraded. Waterway: Waterway transportation is quite convenient with total length of 860 km of channels grade I to grade V.

- Power supply system: Power supplied from national grid, 500 KV North-South power line, 230 KV grid from Phú Lâm – Trà Nóc – Kiên Giang – Hậu Giang. Medium voltage power line have been available in communes of remote areas

- Water supply system: There are water supply systems in all towns and social economic clusters. The system in Vị Thanh town has capacity of 5,000 m3/day, in Long Mĩ: 1,000 m3/day, in Phụng Hiệp: 1,000 m3/day, in Cây Dương: 480 m3/day, in Tân Bình:  m3/day, in Hoà Mĩ: 240 m3/day. Some other systems are on upgrading and expanding stage.

- Post and telecommunication system: All districts and towns are equipped with automatic telecommunication stations allowing high quality communication nationally and internationally. "
