Thai Binh

Geographic location: Thai Binh is bounded by Hai Duong, Hung Yen provinces and Hai Phong city to the North, by Nam Dinh to the South, by Ha Nam to the West and by the Gulf of Tonkin to the East.

Area: 1,546.5 km2

Topographic features: It is flat in Thai Binh without mountains, with 3 directions bounded by rivers and one bounded by the sea. The soils here are rich and formed by silt.

Administrative units: Thai Binh is divided into 1 city (Thai Binh) and 7 districts: Vu Thu, Tien Hai, Thai Thuy, Quynh Phu, Kien Xuong, Hung Ha and Dong Hung.
Population: 1,866,800 (Year 2007)

Natural resources: Thai Binh’s agricultural land area is 103,995 hectares, suitable for growing paddy of high productivity, quality, various vegetables, fruits of good quality. Besides, there is Tien Hai (C) gas mine (exploited since 1986) and Tien Hai mineral water, brown coal with large reserves (more than 30 billion tons) but has not exploited yet due to its deep location (600-1,000m)    

- Tourism resources: The province is famous for its long tradition (both cultural-historical and revolutionary one) with many places of interest such as Keo pagoda, Dong Bang temple, Tran dynasty temple, Le Quy Don, Uncle Ho monuments. Since 2001, the province has invested in upgrading historical monuments, tourism spot in Dong Chau seaside, Van and Den dunes, building ecological, professional villages, entertainment centers to attract tourists.

- Human resources: The province has 1,073,00 labourers of working age, in which labourers in agriculture-forestry sector accounts for 74.3%, industry-construction accounts for 74.3 %, industry and construction accounts for 17%, services-trade accounts for 8.7%. Trained labourers accounts for 23.5% (13.4% of technical workers, 5.5% of professional school certificate holders, 4.5% of higher education degree holders)

Transportation system: The transportation is quite convenient in the province with two main means of transportation which are roadway and waterway. The province’s roadway is properly developed with the highest density of the country (calculated per capital and per area) Thai Binh has a system of Luoc, Hoa, Tra Ly and Red rivers which is convenient for local waterway transportation. It has 49.25km of coastal line with newly built Diem Dien seaport which allows the circulation of 600-1,000 ton ships.

 - Power supply system: The power supply in the province is safe, stable with high quality, timely meet the demand of household and for production. All households in the province are supplied with power. On average, there are 5-6 transformer stations and over 10km electricity lines of all kinds in each commune. The province is among the leaders in electrification with highest numbers of electricity lines and transformer stations. Electricity loss is 6.85%.

 - Post and telecommunication system: The system has been upgraded and modernized with STAREX-VK switchboard with 23,784 new numbers, which has just put in use. All telecommunication stations are equipped with satellites. The number of subscribed telephones is 37,680 (2.1 telephone for every 100 persons). There are 29 stations and 54,932 subscribed telephone numbers. All transmissions are done with E1 (micro and optical cables). There are telephones and daily newspapers delivered in every commune.

- Industrial zones: Thai Binh has 5 industrial zones: Diem Đien with the total area of  50 hectares in Thai Thuy district; Nguyen Duc Canh with the total area of  102 in Xuan Phu district and Tien Phong ward of Thai Binh city; Phuc Khanh with the total area of  300 in Phuc Khanh ward of Thai Binh city; Tien Hai with the total area of  128 hectares in Tien Hai district; Tien Phong with the total area of  56 hectares in Tien Phong ward of Thai Binh city."
