Vinh Long
Geographic location: The province is bounded by Tiền Giang to the north, Bến Tre to the east, Trà Vinh to the eastern south, Cần Thơ to the west, and Đồng Tháp to the western north.
Area: 1,479.1 km2.
Administrative units: Including the town of Vĩnh Long and 6 districts: Long Hồ, Mang Thít, Vũng Liêm, Tam Bình, Bình Minh, Trà Ôn.
Population: 1,062,600 (people)
Natural resources: Vĩnh Long has large area of alum soil but the soil is still very fertile in comparison with the soil in other provinces in the region. The province has large area of alluviall soil along Tiền and Hậu river, which is really fertile with cultivation of more than two paddy crops annually. There are also the natural resources of building material such as sand and clay.
- Tourism resources: Vĩnh Long has high potentiality for developing tourism with many interesting visiting points such as: Công Thần, Thất Phủ temple, Thánh Tinh Ngọc Sơn Quang, ancient pagoda in Trà Ôn, Tân Hoa communal house, An Bình isle etc.
- Human resources: Young labourers at the age of 15-30 accounted for 56.6% labour force. Most of them are literate with 50% high school graduates and 15% secondary school graduates. 7.18% of them finished technical trainings; 2.13% graduated from professional schools, 2.01% graduated from colleges, universities or higher levels (with 42 master’s and doctor’s degree holders). The province is implementing a training program to increase the number of skilled labourers in coming years.
Transportation system: The province’s major means of transportation are roadway and waterway. The province has a total length of 260 km roadway with 5 national highways (No.1, 53, 54, 57, 80) and 5 provincial roadways (No.902, 903, 904, 905, 906). The system of 342 km waterway with 13 main rivers and many channels is convenient for transportation between Vĩnh Long and other provinces in the region.
- Power supply system: In 2002 Vĩnh Long had upgraded 84.9 km power line; build up 1,571km medium and low voltage power line; build up 2,428 transformers with total capacity of 127,253.5 KVA. All local communes and wards are connected to the national grid. The system is capable of supplying power for production to all industrial zones.
- Post and telecommunication system: The communication system has been gradually modernized and expanded with modern technology and equipment (optical cable and digital technology) which can provide high quality national and international communication services. All communes have public telephone service, all districts have mobile phone service. The service of mobile phone, data transfer, phone card and internet have been set up and expanded."
GDP growth rate: It is planned to reach annual GDP growth rate of 14 %. In 2010. Agriculture – fishery will account for 38%, Industry – construction account for 25% and Services account for 37%.
